The slopes of Holme Fell include the massive disused green slate quarry at Hodge Close, located at NY317017. The quarry closed just before the start of the Second World War. It has flooded chambers and tunnels which are used by cave divers for sport, but it is a dangerous location and several divers have died over the years, after becoming lost in the murky waters of the tunnels.
